RunningWorks Cross Country Camp Staff at Camp Canadensis, 2009
This page provides pictures of some of the forty-plus members of the RunningWorks staff at Canadensis,
including the Directors, Four-time Olympian Marcus O'Sullivan and Coaches Cricket Batz and Steve Shaklee.
As usual, the Directors were especially busy, performing multiple functions throughout the week. They had overall
responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the camp but they taught classes as well. Marcus O'Sullivan made two
evening presentations, one on Threshold Training, and a second motivational talk based on his early experiences
in running. And both Cricket Batz and Steve Shaklee worked with others and taught optional afternoon classes ranging
from Barefoot Running and An Introduction to Bikram Yoga to College Selection by Runners and Advanced
Training Techniques.
The rest of the staff had multiple responsibilities as well. Besides serving as cabin proctors, activities supervisors,
and running group leaders, staff members taught a variety of classes. For example, Coach Ringo Adamson, a participant in six
World Championships and two Olympics, served as a group counselor; as "The Drill Master," teaching classes on Flexibility
and Strength Drills; and as "Singing and Dance Instructor" at the camp social! Dave Welsh, a trained engineer in
shoe design and the owner of the Haddonfield Running Company, joined Cricket and Coach Dave Heenan in the "Barefoot Running"
class; served as a group counselor; and he helped St. Joseph's College Coach Claire Hewitt in the Nutrition and Top
Performance class. The team of Chris and Chris -- Coaches Chris Callinan and Chris Grottini -- served as
group counselors, classroom instructors -- Questions and Answers in XC and Track and Field -- and ringmasters in
RunningWorks' crazy "Trivia Night" Program!
The list goes on and on, staff members stepping-up to make a contribution . . . and contribute they did! In addition to
their group counseling responsibilities, Coaches Claire and Rob Hewitt did lessons on Flexibility and Strength
Drills; Chris and Cindy Torello directed lessons on the Psychological Preparation for Racing; Ellen
Dougherty and Annik Lamar worked on Questions and Answers in XC and Track and Field; Dave Heenan,
Marty Owens and Rich Airey worked on Gait Analysis; Marc Pelerin and Trainer Liz Ushry taught
lessons on Injury Prevention; and who can forget the Scavenger Hunt team of Jenna Fasulo, Jenna Peacock,
Ben Hutterer and Mike Sheehan . . . "a LIVE salamander?!"
In addition, counselors provided general supervision during the optional afternoon activities of ga ga, volleyball, swimming,
frisbee, kick ball, wiffle ball, kayaking, canoeing, or just hanging out, and when the campers visited the Nike Van,
staffed by specialists who used scientific technology to teach the athletes how to select the best training and racing shoes.
