RunningWorks Cross Country Camp: Recreation at Camp Canadensis, 2010
There are two runs a day at RunningWorks but there is always time for an impromptu game of
frisbee, cards, volleyball, ga ga, or kickball. And then there are several pools for swimming,
and the lake for kayaking and boating. In addition, there are three special activities:
the Scavenger Hunt, our signature Trivia Night, and the final night's Dance Social!
And for those who want some "quiet time" for reading or thinking, or just "hanging out" with
new and old friends, there's time for that too. Finally, RunningWorks is sponsored by Nike and,
this year they sent their Nike Spikebus to educate and entertain our campers!
General Social Activities

The Nike Spikebus welcomed the campers early and stayed through
most of the week, giving out lots of Nike goodies while educating the
campers on the proper equipment for running.

As it is every year, the most popular recreational activity throughout the week
was Ga Ga, a form of dodgeball played in a wooden octagonal pit. Here are only a few
pictures of Ga Ga players in action taken during the week.

And just to prove that some campers actually tried to think -- and do a little of
their required summer reading -- we have the following:

The 2nd Annual Scavenger Hunt required cabin groups to accomplish twenty-five tasks to
win the game! These included relatively easy assignments such as to "find out from Claire or Rob Hewitt
how and where they got engaged," and to "find at least five different colored sports drinks;" to the
more difficult such as "find the best Justin Beiber look-a-like and have him sing a song in front of
a staff member," and "capture a LIVE salamander and present it to a counselor."
Pictures from this activity are scarce because campers raced all over the camp to accomplish
their goals and because it was growing dark, but the winning team is pictured! Not sure if they actually found a
salamander, though!
Campers brought their own games to camp too! One group had their own Ladder Ball set-up, while another
(or was it the same group?) introduced an odd "game" where they moved awkward and heavy bunk beds to one
cabin and then they moved them back to the original cabin. The cabins they chose had railings at least nine
feet off the ground so the game was pretty challenging. Ringo is thinking of introducing this next year
as both a "team-building" and "strength-building" exercise!
